What is the latest on cable in HPP? I’m just curious as to how fast the cable company is in moving down the hill with new service. The thought of going back to a dial up computer connection for Internet service isn’t very appealing! It doesn’t sound very good going with a satellite due to the rain shadow problem. It was mentioned somewhere that the more people call the faster the service moves along. Can someone post the local phone number to call so I can “gently push” the process? ;>)
Thanks,
Royall

You do not need cable to have broadband Internet service. Verizon provides ADSL service to the area.

There are currently two common broadband technologies commercially available to domestic users. - Roadrunner or similar service, which is delivered over cable - DSL (Digital Line Service), which is delivered over phone. (Satteline internet services are somewhat different in that typically broadband speed is only availabe for download, not upload). From the user's point of view, there really isn't much difference between cable-based and phone-based broadband (though each company will tell you theirs is better for some largely made-up reasons). They both cost about the same (~$30/month). The only difference is whether you need a special modem that plugs into a phone socket or a cable socket. Either way you get broadband speeds and you don't tie up your phone line (it can still be used to make and receive voice calls even if you use DSL). I know people in the park who have roadrunner, and people who have DSL. It all depends on availability, and DSL has wider availability in the park. You can check your DSL availability by entering your phone number here: www22.verizon.com/ForHomeDSL/Channels/DSL/ForHomeDSL.asp

My friend has Verizon DSL on 5th street and he got it a year ago. I'm not sure if Verizon intends to go all the way down. You have to contact the Verizon DSL department for them to verify if it is available in your area yet. If not then your only option is dial up (or waiting until they extend the infrastructure). The cable company offers roadrunner fast access but cable only runs down to 26th or something.

michaelg - like you said Verizon Hawaii has been bought up and all kinds of things are funky at the moment. Try Hawaiian Tel's page here: www.hawaiiantel.com/Residential_Internet.htmclick on "Is DSL available to you" to put in your number

The following is taken from the minutes of the April board meeting. This plan would fairly quickly provide cable service from the ocean up to the middle of the park but skip the sparsely populated middle area (I’m sorry, I don’t know the exact streets). They are getting ready to draw up a contract with Oceanic so If you have any concerns, comments, questions, or suggestions, please email District 8 BOD representative, Barbara Kahn-Langer, c/o HPPOA at hppoa@interpac.net. Oceanic Warner Cable Company: Skip Tavares said that his company is receiving requests for increased service, but their present fiber-optic facilities are full. He is seeking another easement from the Board to install a hub in the middle of the subdivision, at or near the Activity Center lot. A twenty-foot square of land is required, which will have a chain-link fence around it. Tavares said service cannot be provided until an area meets the thirty homes per mile requirement. At first the hub will only relay signals from the existing site at 32nd and Paradise, but eventually more equipment will be added. Placing it in the center of the subdivision makes it less expensive to extend service to populated areas further from the highway. The only noise would be from a back-up generator in case of a power outage.
Barbara asked what the Association would receive in exchange for allowing the easement on their parcel. Allan said it could not accept fees. Tavares said his company could provide free internet service to the office, as well as several computers with internet service for the library.

Verizon does not have dsl where Im at on 5th street, but Hawaiian Tel does have it available. It's not a cable modem.....but it is faster than dialup.

Well I retract that statement I made above. Hawaiian Tel is now telling me that they don't have dsl on 5th street where Im at. Just dialup. Seems they stopped when they hit macuu and 5th and didn't extend it on 5th from macuu to the end of the subdivision. Any other way to get fast internet access in an area of the park where no service provider will go?

We have Cocunut Wireless as where we are on 4th we don't get cable or dsl either. Cocunut wireless is in the process of puting up another tower on 4th between Paradise and Kaloli, so those in this area and down to the beach should have even better service. It is supposed to be up and running around the end of July if building goes as planned.
We really like the service so far. It does cut out some, but is so much better than dial-up. And with the new tower, should be excellent.
Call Bob at Coconut Wireless at 808-930-0100. I think the website is coconut-wireless.net.
Hope this helps. :-)

Correction: The Coconut-Wireless tower is planned to go up between Paradise and MAKU'U, not Kaloli. Sorry.
