Went down to Oceanic Cable and asked them where is cable tv/internet in the park. They said they are down at 19th. But indicated that several concerned parties on Beach rd offered to pay the cable company to bring the cable line all the way down to the ocean. When oceanic receives payment from them, they will start extending the line to the ocean. I sure hope this happens!

This is an article I wrote for the HPP newsletter, The Conch, which was cut by the editor and will not be in the upcoming issue. I thought it was information that might be useful to residents who do not have broad-band internet access so I am going to post it here. September 05 COCONUT WIRELESS
You may have heard the rumor about a tower being installed on 4th between Kaloli and Paradise and wondered what it was all about. Well, the tower has been put on hold for the time being but the company behind it, Coconut Wireless, is alive and well, supplying high-speed internet and related services via microwave to homeowners all over the Puna District.
According to manager, Bob Numbers, the signal is beamed through a series of relays from their operations center in Hilo. They have two existing towers set on cinder cones, one in Leilani and one at Akaka Falls. Without the HPP tower, broad-band service will be achieved by relaying signals from mast antennas placed on selected private residences. The resulting internet connection, he says, will be comparable to cable, better than DSL. Coconut Wireless is in the middle of an infrastructure upgrade which should put all of HPP within their service area by September.
There will, of course, be installation and monthly fees as well as equipment that must be installed on your roof but they promise a professional installation team to get you up and running quickly as well as comprehensive support services. For more information, you can contact Coconut Wireless at 808-930-0100 or visit their web site at www.coconut-wireless.netThere is also this bit of info gleaned from the General Manager’s Report which will appear in the next Conch… Oceanic Time Warner had planned on locating a hub for their technical equipment close to the Activity Center; however, “the terms of the contract were not to their liking so they have decided to pursue another course of action.” How or when they will expand cable service to the lower reaches of the park is unknown at the present time.

I talked with Bob Numbers yesterday about getting hooked up with wireless at my residence on 5th street off Macuu. Unfortunately the relays they have in the park that sends the signal to their main transmitter do not cover the whole park. Areas (like mine) that have a signal strength less than 70% will not be able to use their service until a tower is built in the park. Also the cost for the installation and set up will run about $700.00 to $800.00 plus $50.00 monthly cost. With regard to Oceanic cable......I've had my home in the park for 15 years. When I first had it built back in 1990 and applied for cable... they were on 24th. In 15 years they have move to their current location on 19th. At that rate...they will reach my street in the year 2050. I wouldn't hold my breath for cable service for customers in the lower end of the park in this century.

I see from this thread that as of about one year ago there was some hope of cable service throughout HPP. What is the current situation? Thanks.

I believe they are at 18th street. They also have connected parts of beach road. I've been told that if enough people call the cable company.... day after day.....month after month.... and request service in HPP..... they just might do something about it. Otherwise it will be a very, very long time for those people between 18th and beach get cable.

BEFORE YOU GET DSL Did you Know? DSL by Hawaiiantel ? [16.4 HAWAIIAN TELCOM NETWORK, For the purposes of backup and maintainence, we may use, copy, display, store, transmit, translate, rearrange, reformat, view and distribute your information to multipule Hawaiian Telcom or third party hosting servers. We do not guarantee that these proceedures will prevent, the lost of, alteration of, or the improper access to, your information.] Those of you who have slipped that little disc into your computer when they sent you the DSL box UPS from (Viriginia? or NC?) somewhere out on the southeast coast.
You agreed to this. Along with a lot of other fine print I bet none of ya read. Just a guess. The local sales rep. who was all set to hook me up, had no idea that the terms included this "little" agreement.
Also, if any damage results from their equipt. to yours etc. and you have a legal battle over it? It will be in a court back east and you agree to pay for their legal representation as well. So Ya, ok , sign me up.? I passed. dial-up has been fine for 7 years, who's in that much of a hurry they need it downloaded now! Part of the selling of SPEED! Fast cars, internet, and ..............press download and step away from the box.

I'm on 5th street in HPP and I just got rid of Hawaiian Tel all together (phone lines and dialup). I use to have dialup because that was the only thing available ... So I needed their phone line. Now I have AWS wireless internet down here. They have several relay towers in the park... and its faster then Hawaiian Tels DSL. The best part is...there was nothing to install. It's a "hot spot". Just turn on your laptop and go. $50.00 a month on a 12 month contract.....$75.00 if you like to go month by month. They even have a daily rate like T-Mobile in Starbucks and even a 2 hour rate. www.awshi.com:8002/Portal?CIP=hotspot.awshi.com&CPORT=8090
